B

y the time you read this I may be a mum!!! Matt and I are expecting our baby on the 26th February and are very excited about it. It does mean that I will be away from for 6 months! Which seems like an age to me. But don’t panic, the wonderful work of SCAt is being left in the capable hands of the youth workers of Woking. So here is a glimpse into what amazing people the youth workers are …

Angie

NAME: Angie Choat

AGE: 31

LENGTH OF TIME IN YOUTH WORK:
Full time paid, 7yrs, before that 4yrs at college and then 3 years before that – about 14yrs in total.

COLOUR OF YOUR TOOTHBRUSH: white and green.

WHAT IS THE NAUGHTIEST THING YOU DID IN SCHOOL? I put a joke insect poo in my friend’s drink, got sent to the head of year cause the dinner lady was mean and didn't see the funny side of it.  The head of year nearly wet his pants when we told him why we were sent to him.

WHO WAS YOUR FAVOURITE TEACHER AT SCHOOL AND WHY? My biology teacher, Mrs Shaw cause she believed in me and encouraged me. No-one thought I would ever pass my GCSEs let alone go on to A-levels and a degree.  My nieces still go to my old school and the teachers don't believe them when they tell them what I'm doing now.

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT AT SCHOOL? I'm big, I've always been big even at school, and I was always bullied by some lads. One whole school assembly they were putting out the chairs. We sat in alphabetical order in assembly and so they knew which chair I would sit on, and they unscrewed the nuts, so when someone sat on it, it broke … the whole of the upper school and teachers saw me fall flat on my back as the chair broke when I sat on it. I think that would have to be my most embarrassing school moment...

WHAT’S YOUR VISION FOR THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF WOKING? That they are valued, listened to, respected and encouraged to be who they want to be, and not to be afraid to stand up for what they believe in.

CHRISSIE’S COMMENT: Angie works at Trinity Methodist Church and is involved in the SCAt work in Woking High and SJB.  She is a huge laugh and is not afraid to be ‘out there’ with her faith which is an inspiration to me and many young people.  Angie is passionate about the young people of Woking and is in charge of the team of youth workers in SJB.

Mike

NAME: Mike Finch

AGE: 32

LENGTH OF TIME IN YOUTH WORK: 12½ years

COLOUR OF TOOTHBRUSH: Blue.

WHAT IS THE NAUGHTIEST THING YOU DID IN SCHOOL?
Turned up for school one morning and hid behind a tree and when the bell went to go in I ran out of school through a hole in the fence.

WHO WAS YOUR FAVOURITE TEACHER AT SCHOOL AND WHY? Mr Streeton because he got me started in weight-lifting (a boyhood dream).

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT AT SCHOOL? In primary school going to PE without my shorts on.

WHAT’S YOUR VISION FOR THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF WOKING? For there to be a place for young people to hang out where there are no boundaries like religion.

A RANDOM FACT ABOUT YOURSELF IS… I'm a former Surrey and Sussex junior power-lifting champion.

CHRISSIE’S COMMENT: Mike is a trainee youth worker and helps Angie out at Trinity.  Mike is involved in the SCAt work in SJB.  He has loads of experience as a youth worker and has a massive heart for sharing the faith.

Matt

NAME: Matt Phipps

AGE: 23

LENGTH OF TIME IN YOUTH WORK: About 4 years in different countries - Northern Ireland, Romania etc.

COLOUR OF TOOTHBRUSH: Orange.

WHAT IS THE NAUGHTIEST THING YOU DID IN SCHOOL? Walked through wet cement in middle school, because I was desperate for the toilet.  Cost them a lot of money.

WHO WAS YOUR FAVOURITE TEACHER AT SCHOOL AND WHY? Mr James, Maths.  Because of the comments in my homework diary.  Such as "Mrs Phipps I think you should take away Matthew's Playstation, it is having a influence on his behaviour"  J

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT AT SCHOOL? When a can of cherry coke fell out of the vending machine.  It exploded on me and many other people.

WHAT’S YOUR VISION FOR THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF WOKING? I want to see the young people catch on fire with passion for God.  And then share him boldly with their friends.

A RANDOM FACT ABOUT YOURSELF IS… I once got my head stuck in a revolving door, in Switzerland.  IT HURT

CHRISSIE’S COMMENT: Matt works at St. Paul’s and is involved in the SCAt work in BDB and Woking High.  He is fantastic at what he does and is leading the team of youth workers in Woking High.

Ali

NAME: Alastair Etheridge

AGE: 28

LENGTH OF TIME IN YOUTH WORK: 5½ years in full time youth work.

COLOUR OF TOOTHBRUSH: White, but it makes the sound of a racing car. Brmmmm, Brmmmm.

WHAT IS THE NAUGHTIEST THING YOU DID IN SCHOOL? I'm not sure I can say as I still haven't been caught for it yet.  I don't want to risk a detention now.  The 2nd naughtiest thing I did was set fire to an overhead projector.  I also drilled a hole in someone's DT project.  I could go on …

WHO WAS YOUR FAVOURITE TEACHER AT SCHOOL AND WHY? Mr Dearsley was pretty cool and enjoyed lots of banter.  Mr Jameson had a story for everything which was always entertaining in a 'let's sidetrack him' sort of way, and Mr Jones the Welsh Wizard was an amazing chemistry teacher whose experiments we always sabotaged behind his back so that when he demonstrated them he would exclaim in a mystified tone 'well it worked a minute ago'.

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT AT SCHOOL? Ripping my trousers playing football at lunchtime creating an Isle of Wight sized hole to expose my underwear.

WHAT’S YOUR VISION FOR THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF WOKING? To know Jesus.

A RANDOM FACT ABOUT YOURSELF IS… I once fell through a roof.  Not in a paralysed man sort of way but in an aaaaaaaahhhhhhh sort of way.  Luckily I landed legs straddling the handle of a garden fork.  I say luckily as although painful, imagine if the fork had been the other way round.  Ali Kebab anyone?

CHRISSIE’S COMMENT: Ali works at Christ Church and is involved in the SCAt work in Woking High.  He is great to work with and has some brilliant stories which will make you laugh (see above) and inspire you with what God is doing in Woking and in Christ Church.

Paul

NAME: Paul Langtree

AGE: 25

LENGTH OF TIME IN YOUTH WORK: Just over 5 years.

COLOUR OF TOOTHBRUSH: Blue and white.

WHAT IS THE NAUGHTIEST THING YOU DID IN SCHOOL? I was a bit of a goody-goody.  I think I forgot my homework a couple of times.

WHO WAS YOUR FAVOURITE TEACHER AT SCHOOL AND WHY? I liked most of my teachers for different reasons. I respected my Maths teacher (Mr Wong) because he was strict but fair, and quite funny sometimes!

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT AT SCHOOL? Playing the saxophone solo for 'Mumma just killed a man' (from Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen) in the school summer concert was pretty scary, but not really embarrassing.

WHAT’S YOUR VISION FOR THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF WOKING? To see them all become part of God's family – building the church and spreading the Gospel in an exciting and relevant way.

A RANDOM FACT ABOUT YOURSELF IS… I can do an Eskimo roll in a kayak!!!

CHRISSIE’S COMMENT: Paul works at St. John’s and is involved in the SCAt work in Winston.  He is great fun to work with and tells ‘funny’ jokes.  Paul is leading the team of youth workers in Winston.

Soul

NAME: Soul Magura

AGE: 28

LENGTH OF TIME IN YOUTH WORK: 10 years almost 11.

COLOUR OF TOOTHBRUSH: The one in my car is pink and the one in my house is blue and white.

WHAT IS THE NAUGHTIEST THING YOU DID IN SCHOOL? I think we’ll keep the angelic image of me.

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT AT SCHOOL? Got told off in front of the whole school after a school trip.  Innocent of course.

WHAT’S YOUR VISION FOR THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF WOKING? Young people sometimes get bad press from the media. I want to inspire young people to be a generation that proves them wrong.

A RANDOM FACT ABOUT YOURSELF IS… Have given a talk on live TV before.

CHRISSIE’S COMMENT: Soul works at St. Mary of Bethany and is involved in the SCAt work in Woking High, Woking College and SJB.  He is funny and can bring laughter to anything.  At the same time he is full of wisdom and comments that make you ponder.

Cassie

NAME: Cassie Leach

AGE:23

LENGTH OF TIME IN YOUTH WORK: 2½ years, full time, been leading a youth cell for 9 years.

COLOUR OF YOUR TOOTHBRUSH: Pink of course

WHAT IS THE NAUGHTIEST THING YOU DID IN SCHOOL? I was sent to the headmaster for ‘bullying a teacher’. Oops!

WHO WAS YOUR FAVOURITE TEACHER AT SCHOOL AND WHY? Probably Mr Bennet because we thought it was really funny to call him Gordon even though his name was really Terry.

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT AT SCHOOL? I honestly can’t think of a time when I was embarrassed.

WHAT’S YOUR VISION FOR THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF WOKING? To see young people on fire for God and setting others alight for God’s glory.

A RANDOM FACT ABOUT YOURSELF IS…  I can put my fist in my mouth.

CHRISSIE’S COMMENT: Cassie works at The Coign and is involved in the SCAt work working in Winston.  What can I say about Cassie other than out there, happy and will always have the right thing to say, or the right dance for the moment!
