Moving up to secondary school
Moving up to secondary school
In the summer of 2001 Emma
Sergeant, who was then
SCAt
Secondary schools worker,
introduced a new series of lessons in primary schools under the title 'It's your move'.
They are designed to help children
in the transition to secondary schools.
It's your move still continues as Chrissie writes …
Scat does It’s Your Move lessons with year 6’s in around 8 schools at the end of the summer term. The lessons are aimed at helping the year 6’s in their transition from junior school to secondary school. The team that leads the lessons are all youth workers who are involved in the secondary schools work, and therefore the teams that the young people will see in the secondary school they go to. The idea is to answer any questions they may have and also to get them thinking about what they are looking forward to, what they are scared about and what they are going to miss about the school that they are leaving. The lessons are quite informal and involve a lot of student participation.
Alongside the lessons we offer a book to the schools which is
produced by Scripture Union. The book has stories, games,
doodle pages and an A-Z of school life. The whole thing is to
encourage young people that although this is a scary adventure they are
going on, there are people around who have been through it and also
people around to support them through this time.
We have seen the benefits of It’s Your Move lessons as in September
when the detached team is hanging around in the school we have lots of
year 7’s coming up to us and talking about the lesson we did with
them. I even get year 9’s coming up to me and asking me if I
did the lesson in their school about moving on! It certainly
makes and impact, and I hope it calms a few nerves about the big move
they are about to make.
